New Standard On Tyre Tread Depth Measurement Backed By Anche To Be Implemented

2025-09-22

JJF 2185-2025 Calibration Specification for Automatic Measuring Instruments of Tyre Tread Depth of Motor Vehicles (hereinafter referred to as the "Specification"), co-drafted by Anche, officially took effect on August 8. The Specification explicitly defines the metrological characteristics, calibration items and methods, expression of calibration results and recalibration time intervals for automatic motor vehicle tyre tread depth measuring instruments, thereby offering an operational technical foundation for metrological institutions.

Calibration Specification

The standard Items and methods for safety technology inspection of motor vehicles stipulates specific requirements for tyre tread depth across different vehicle types. For instance, the tread depth of passenger car and trailer tyres must be greater than or equal to 1.6 mm. If it exceeds the standard limit, the tyres must be replaced. Excessive measurement instrument errors can lead to inaccurate test results and data, thereby increasing the risk of traffic accidents such as skidding and rear-end collisions. The Specification provides clear reference limits for the indication error of the measuring instrument: when the indicated tread depth is less than 10 mm, the error shall not exceed ±0.1mm; when the indicated depth is 10 mm or greater, the error shall not exceed ±1%. The measuring instrument is precisely calibrated by clearly defining the technical specifications of the tread depth calibration gauge and auxiliary tools, ensuring the reliability and accuracy of the test results.

This Specification will ensure the accuracy of vehicle tyre test results at the source, mitigate the risk of traffic accidents arising from excessive tyre wear and further enhance road traffic safety. Additionally, it will facilitate the intelligent upgrading of inspection equipment and standardize vehicle inspection services. Anche will continue to capitalize on its strengths in vehicle inspection technology and collaborate with industry peers to drive advancements in vehicle inspection technology and foster the development of the industry in China and across the global.
