On August 8, the new Chinese standard, JJF 2185-2025 Calibration Specification for Automatic Measuring Instruments of Tire Pattern Depth of Motor Vehicles (hereinafter referred to as the "Specification") officially took effect. This groundbreaking standard establishes comprehensive technical frameworks for: metrological performance parameters, calibration items and methods, verification methodologies, result analysis procedures and re-calibration intervals of automatic tire tread depth measurement system. Serving as an operational technical foundation, the Specification provides metrology institutions with standardized procedures to ensure measurement accuracy and enhance automotive safety compliance.
The standard Items and methods for safety technology inspection of motor vehicles establishes stringent safety requirements for tire tread depth across vehicle categories, mandating a minimum 1.6mm threshold for passenger cars and trailers. Non-compliance necessitates immediate tire replacement to mitigate skidding and collision risks. To address measurement accuracy challenges, the specification introduces tiered error tolerance thresholds:
Precision thresholds:
<10mm readings: ±0.1mm maximum error
≥10mm readings: ±1% error margin
This metrological standard creates a closed-loop calibration system, ensuring measurement equipment meets statutory accuracy requirements while providing metrological institutions with executable verification methodologies. The implementation directly supports China's vehicle safety inspection regime by standardizing equipment performance and reducing systemic measurement deviations.
This standard establishes a metrological foundation for ensuring vehicle tire inspection accuracy from the source, effectively mitigating skidding and collision risks associated with excessive tread wear. By harmonizing measurement precision with safety thresholds, the specification concurrently drives intelligent equipment upgrades and standardizes service development across China’s motor vehicle inspection sector.
Looking ahead, Anche remains committed to leveraging its technological leadership in automotive inspection systems, collaborating with industry stakeholders to advance metrological verification regimes and regulatory compliance frameworks. This initiative not only elevates national inspection capabilities but also lays the groundwork for a safer, more standardized automotive ecosystem aligned with China's strategic industrial upgrading goals."
