China Implements Technical Standard for Electric Vehicle Maintenance and Repair

2025-02-14

In recent years, China has witnessed a surge in the population of electric vehicles (EVs), presenting unprecedented market growth prospects. However, as EVs become increasingly prevalent, the demand for repair and maintenance services has soared accordingly, underscoring the pressing need for a standardized and regulated service system. Recognizing this imperative, China unveiled the national standard GB/T 44510 Technical Requirements for Maintenance and Repair of New Energy Vehicle in September 2024 and fully implemented it from January 1, 2025.

This standard covers the technical requirements for EV maintenance and repair, and specifies the maintenance, inspection and repair processes for key components such as power batteries, drive motors and electrical control system. It mandates the meticulous tracking of battery usage and the conduct of periodic performance test to guarantee its safe and stable operation. Furthermore, in terms of safety technical specifications, GB/T 44510-2024 stipulates the formulation of electrical safety and environmental protection operating procedures, with the aim of substantially mitigating risks and potential safety threats during maintenance activities. Undoubtedly, these measures will significantly bolster the safety and reliability of EVs.

In addition, the standard highlights the importance of utilizing specialized tools and equipment in EV repairs. Maintenance personnel are mandated to employ safety-compliant, specialized tools and equipment to guarantee both the effectiveness and safety of repairs. This provision will catalyze the upgrading and renewal of maintenance equipment for EVs, thereby elevating the overall technical proficiency of the industry. Concurrently, to further strengthen the technical competence of maintenance personnel, the standard advocates for automotive maintenance companies to offer regular professional training to their staff and to establish assessment mechanisms. Such initiatives will foster a greater number of highly qualified and skilled professionals within the EV maintenance sector, thereby laying a solid foundation for its sustainable development.

The release of this standard marks a pivotal milestone in the evolution of China's EV industry. It is poised to expedite the standardization of the EV maintenance sector while presenting more rigorous demands and challenges to manufacturers of EV maintenance equipment.
