CITA RAG Africa Conference 2024, jointly organized by CITA, the International Committee for Vehicle Inspection, and UNEP, the United Nations Environment Programme, took place on October 22-23 in Nairobi, Kenya. Over 100 regional and international experts, policymakers and industry elites gathered together to find actionable solutions to improve the African vehicle fleet. The event, themed by “Working together to improve the African vehicle fleet”, aimed at tackling two of Africa’s pressing issues: road safety challenges and improving the quality of vehicles across the continent.
The event lasted for two days, with the first day featured by an array of keynote speeches opened with remarks from CITA President Gerhard Müller, UNEP’s Sheila Aggarwal-Khan and Kenyan officials, and a round table discussion on the best possible PTI models for Africa continent. Institutional representatives shared global perspectives on sustainable mobility, while African speakers discussed largely on local challenges. Mr Eduard FERNÁNDEZ,CITA Executive Director made a presentation about decarbonization, pointed out that vehicle electrification is an effective way to reduce carbon emission. Greenhouse gases pose a threat to the life and health of all mankind. Vehicle electrification is a general trend and will inevitably drive the development of related industries.
On the second day, the representative from ICCT introduced their research and study on remote sensing detection system in Kampala and Delhi, India, A panel on harmonizing vehicle standards across Africa followed, with discussions led by regional representatives from the East African Community and Northern Corridor. Representatives of Rwanda, Ghana and Kenya shared their concrete measures to improve vehicle safety. In the afternoon session, the delegation paid a technical visit to a local test center owned by Kenya Ministry of Roads and Transport.
Anche Technologies, a supplier of PTI equipment (e.g. brake testers, headlight testers, side slip testers, suspension testers, play detectors, etc.) and an important CITA member from China, attended the meeting and its representative actively participated in the discussion of relevant topics, shared the successful experience and practices of China.
